NSW Police have charged a 20-year-old man for allegedly making a Nazi salute after gatecrashing a Sydney transgender rights rally and hurling abuse at marchers.

The Sydney Trans Day of Resistance rally was on Saturday afternoon (November 23) at Pride Square in Newtown.

Supporters gathered at the Square and waved transgender flags and chanted as they marched through the inner city suburb.

During the event the 20-year-old man, who wasn’t part of the march, stepped out in front of the group and allegedly made threatening remarks before performing a Nazi salute.

NSW Police officers arrested the gatecrasher and took him to Newtown Police station.

Officers charged him with knowingly displaying the Nazi symbol by public act without excuse and making a gesture in a public place that is a Nazi salute.

The man was granted bail and will face Newtown Local Court in Sydney on January 14, 2025.

NSW laws criminalise display of Nazi symbols

The New South Wales parliament passed the laws criminalising Nazi symbols back in 2022.

The laws make it a criminal offence to knowingly display a Nazi symbol in public without a reasonable excuse.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 12 months’ imprisonment or a $11,000 fine or both for an individual.
