The Queensland Government must protect the healthcare of trans youth
All young people deserve the healthcare they need to grow up healthy and happy. For trans young people, gender affirming care is life-changing, and often life-saving, healthcare.
The Queensland Children’s Gender Service (QCGS) was found by an independent review to offer high-quality care that’s consistent with international guidelines.
The review made 25 recommendations to make the QCGS even better, including increasing its funding.
The previous government committed to implementing those recommendations in full and doubling the QCGS’s funding. But the new government is backflipping.
The Queensland Government is blocking the review’s recommendations to improve the Queensland Children’s Gender Service and taking away its funding.
This is an unacceptable attack on the rights, lives and healthcare of trans youth.
And it’s not just trans youth who are at risk. In the US, targeting the healthcare of trans young people was the first step in the far-right’s campaign to take away people’s right to make decisions about their own lives and bodies – including the right to an abortion.
The previous government committed to implementing those recommendations in full and doubling the QCGS’s funding. But the new government is backflipping.
It’s time for us to fight back.
We’re calling on Premier David Crisafulli and Health Minister Tim Nicholls to protect healthcare for trans youth.
They must commit to implementing the full recommendations of the 2024 independent review into the Queensland Children’s Gender Service and restore its already-pledged funding.
Anything less means abandoning the health and wellbeing of trans youth.
